The Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has been called up to the England squad for the friendly international against Holland on Wednesday following the withdrawal of Jack Wilshere and Michael Carrick.

The Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger had already claimed that Wilshere would not play due to an ankle injury that prevented the 19-year-old from playing any part in the Gunners' friendly defeat to Benfica on Saturday evening. That belief was confirmed on Monday lunchtime, with Wilshere heading back to his club for further treatment ahead of the Premier League opener at Newcastle.

The Manchester United winger Ashley Young is hoping his move to Old Trafford will keep him in the England team. Young moved from Aston Villa to United this summer and impressed in yesterday's Community Shield win over Manchester City at Wembley.

"Fingers crossed, it will boost my England chances even more. As long as I'm doing well for Manchester United then fingers-crossed I'll be playing for England."Young was delighted to win his first trophy as a United player, having set up the first of United's three goals as they came back from 2-0 down. "It's always a good way to start the season," he said. "We wanted to go out and put in a good performance."

He added: "When you get Manchester City and Manchester United, it's never friendly but we showed we're the better side."England may be without Danny Welbeck after the striker sustained an ankle injury during the Community Shield.
