Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is revelling in the role of striker and confirmed that he hopes to have a good season to set himself up for a successful World Cup next summer in South Africa. Rooney would appear to be the main beneficiary of Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from Old Trafford this summer, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson promising him a more central role in the team.

Rooney has repaid his manager's decision with two goals in as many games, finding the net against Chelsea in the Community Shield and also in the Premier League opener against Birmingham City.He told The Daily Mail, "That’s two goals in two games and hopefully that’ll continue.
If we can win the league this season it will set myself and the other England lads up nicely for the World Cup." The England international will be hoping to continue his good form in Wednesday night's fixture at Premier League newcomers Burnley.
